Workers were able to cap a ruptured natural gas pipeline in Mission Valley Wednesday evening, hours after thousands of homes and businesses within a half-mile radius of the broken line were evacuated.
A five-mile stretch of state Route 163 between Interstate 8 and Interstate 805 was closed for several hours, creating a traffic headache in the area that worsened as the afternoon commute got underway.
The freeway was reopened around 7:50 p.m., and the evacuation orders were lifted.
